Intramural softball special: Golden Ducks vs. I Eta Pi

The Golden Ducks continued their winning ways by beating I Eta Pi 8-4 on Wednesday evening. The victory ran their regular season win streak to an unprecedented 16 games. Strong pitching and fielding propelled the Ducks to victory on a night where their offense was less than impressive.

The Ducks had their smallest offensive output in two seasons as they were held to single digits for the first time since the fall 2007.

"Our bats really weren't there tonight. It's the first game of the season, though, so I'm not too worried. There were a few moments where I got really frustrated but all in all, a win is a win,"
said coach Ben Pressley, concerning offensive production.

Despite the low run total the game was not without its exciting moments. In the top of the first innning with two outs, Coach Pressley called a double steal with 3B Bairet Bazemore on third and LF JJ Hulet at first. As the I Eta Pi catcher threw down to second, in a vain attempt to catch Hulet, Bazemore took off for home, sliding in safely to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

Later in the game Hulet and Bazemore would team up again, this time for a sharp double play keyed on Hulet's laser throw to double off a runner at third. 2B Wyatt Bevis also made an unassisted double play by catching a line drive and stepping on second to double off a runner. Pressley would also garner two webgems by snagging a liner up the middle and running down a pop-up in foul territory behind third base.

Overall, the Ducks looked a tad rusty in their first game back. Only time will tell if they will regain their championship form or fade into oblivion as yet another one time title winner.
